The Armageddon Seeds (Dekker's Dozen 1)
The Armageddon Seeds (Dekker's Dozen 1)
Dekker Knight has a secret past.
Vivian “Vesuvius” Briggs has a sword and a chip on her shoulder.
Together they run a crew of sanctioned space mercenaries: the Dozen.
During an operation gone wrong, an alien spy steals a seemingly insignificant item: a benign seed found on Ganymede. A secret cult believes it has immense power, perhaps coming from the Garden of Eden itself. If it falls into enemy hands, it could wreak unspeakable evil across the galaxy.
The Dozen fight to keep their debts settled, fuel in their ship, and some equilibrance to their moral ledger. They are more than mercenaries: they are part of a family they’ve chosen—and this seed threatens to tear it apart.
Between a corrupt government, and forces in league with the notorious villain, Prognon Austicon, threats squeeze them from every side. Dekker and Austicon have a vendetta. Vivian’s family and Austicon have a history. Austicon has powerful friends and a superweapon. With the fate of the universe hanging in the balance, can the Dozen swing the pendulum back?

There's romance, aliens, humor, space battles, boss battles, and possible universe destruction! What's not to enjoy?

Book 1, the first 45 pages are a historical backdrop that lays out the arc of the series. The author gives a great prologue for ways to read this story. I chose to read them in book number order and absolutely enjoyed the stories. Woven in are cultural references that struck me to the core and made me look at myself and ask...could I be that Watchman? 3 books read in record time and the last one left me with...Where is #4?
Loved them Christopher. Glad I met you bought the books. Looking forward to reading more of your work.

**** SPOILER ALERT ****
"Dekker's Dozen: Weeds Of Eden" is the first of Schmitz' work that I've read.
It was an entertaining, action packed tale. The author's world building and character development are very good.
I look forward to reading more of Schmitz' work.
In the interest of transparency: I was given a review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review.
It is my own honest opinion.

This book reimagines creation from an aboreal perspective. It combines different religions with sci fi and time travel. It took me a little while to get into the story but was worth the effort.

You've got a quippy crew (one of whom really likes explosions) that's also a set of feared mercenaries; a will-they, won't-they romance; some truly scary villains; questionable authority figures; bad guys that are really good guys and good guys that are really bad guys; weird alien species, some of whom are bioengineered; a run down ship that barely manages to stay afloat; and sentient plants (evil sentient plants, actually). Add them all together, and you get a complex, imaginative story that's one heck of a wild ride!

I haven't read any of the other books of this very long list.
Since it was free I expected a beginning of a series but I'm not sure.
I did like some of the characters but the "romance" was weird.
I liked the realism of loosing members now and then.
But there were also characters who couldn't figure out what group they belonged to, or whether they were food or bad.
So I think I'll pass on buying more.

This short story introduced me to the characters of the Dekker's Dozen series. Fast moving, quick read, it enticed me with the background of the Dozen (actually 13) mercenaries who are working in the future, hoping for a fueled up ship, morally upright contracts, and a healthy crew (which is as close to a family as most of them get).
Well written, good characters, evil villains, New species, space travel, and magical/religious tones! What's not to like?
